Farm to school is a movement to improve the health of all school aged children and communities, while supporting local and regional farmers. Through access to nutritious food, and sensory-based garden education, youth learn to appreciate and connect with where their food comes from.
In pursuit of this goal Wellspring, has partnered with Kewaskum, Grafton and Cedarburg school districts, among others, in piloting initiatives to engage and teach youth about gardening and the source of their food. These “farm to school” programs are tailored to each school and involve four program areas.
Produce Taste Tests
Students are introduced to new veggies and get the chance to sample during their lunch periods. Youth vote on how they enjoyed the “Veggie of the Month”. Newsletters including recipes are sent home to parents to engage families.
Farm Field Trips
Students connect with where food comes from, while learning about all the systems working together on an organic farm! Groups taste seasonal produce while participating in garden chores and games. Interested in bringing your class or group out to Wellspring? Learn more on our Farm Visits/Tour page.
School Gardens
Children plant, grow, harvest and learn in school gardens. Food raised is used for lunchroom samplings, served in school salad bars and lunch lines or donated to community organizations.
Farmer in the Classroom
School Visits During the school year, Wellspring offers Farmer in the Classroom visits to schools within the region. During an hour-long visit, students will participate in sensory based learning activities, learn about healthy eating and how plants grow, get to ask questions to the visiting farmer and of course, enjoy a fresh produce snack!
Programs for all grade levels are available. If you are interested in setting up a visit for your classroom or homeschool group, or would like more information on the program, please contact Wellspring's Education Team.
Garden Education Leaders - Volunteer Program
Do you have a passion for local food, gardening or working with youth? Wellspring is recruiting talented and motivated individuals to be Garden Education Leaders! After training, these volunteers will be given the opportunity to lead or co-lead education classes, and farm to school activities, everything from monthly produce taste tests to field trips on the farm.
Opportunities are available on the farm in Newburg as well as at several locations in Washington and Ozaukee counties, and the greater Milwaukee area. Opportunities are available year round and at varying days and times. For more information on becoming a Garden Education Leader, please contact our Education Director.
